We all want the best for the children in our care, whether we’re parents, carers or educators. The only way we can achieve that is by working together, communicating and collaborating to create the best outcomes and support those individuals with special needs to be the best they can be. INFORMATION and SUPPORT

Working with schools has shown us that access to accurate information, advice and support as and when they need it is crucial. Simply getting a straight forward answer to a parent whose child has special needs can’t wait. Which is why our exclusive, £20 per month membership can change all that.

During a busy day, when you need advice or urgent support, our staff can help. We can support you with deciphering the latest legislation, give advice on how to speed up processes and cut through the bureaucracy, as well as counsel on family liaison issues, and can signpost to the relevant agencies to contact. What’s more, we will keep you up to date with new information and legislation so you are always on track.

STUDENT PROGRESS

Students in your care must make some form of progress; it may be progress with literacy, attendance or improved mental and emotional wellbeing. We understand the emphasis on building resilience and character amongst children and young people but also realise that often those with special needs have these in abundance, but sometimes this is not immediately evident. There may be a number of factors that are having an impact on progress, from inconsistent family support, to a lack of suitable interventions, reports or therapies. We can support you to develop students’ progress both at an individual and strategic level. We have the time and expertise to identify issues and provide resolutions that get pupils back on track. Crucially we can help you implement an ‘Assess, Plan, Do, Review’ cycle which gives you the tools to self evaluate and effectively monitor and report on the progress of students with additional needs.

KEYWORKING

When relationships break down it makes planning for that child extremely difficult and even detrimental to their progress. Communication between families and schools can deteriorate for many reasons, it may be because of families’ frustration having to tell the same story, or raise the same concerns, to a multitude of different people.

Keyworkers perform a vital role, but rarely is this their only role, which makes availability and consistency a struggle.

We provide an independent keyworker service for schools, which offers families emotional and practical support, avoids problems escalating and helps them build resilience. This approach can also minimise the need for other, higher-cost, crisis services. We know, for example, that effective keyworking, co-production and increased family satisfaction reduces the number of conflict situations. We are experienced in identifying potential funding and other opportunities for families, whilst making sure those services and resources are targeted and used most effectively. In this way keyworking helps to promote a positive relationship between the school and the family for the whole of the childs’ educational journey.

EHC PLANS

The paperwork trails for Education, Health and Care needs assessments can be confusing and laborious, especially when it comes to working cross border, with different local authorities and health providers. We have significant training and expertise in the legalities surrounding assessments and our in depth knowledge, in areas such as transfer review timescales means we can tackle any issues that may be holding up the process and get things done quicker. We are adept at pulling together successful supporting educational evidence for a request, in terms of aspirations, outcomes and provision, which frees up your time to focus more on the students and less on the administration. We are able to cover the whole spectrum of difficulties and the full age range of 0 – 25 for EHC needs assessments.

SENCO SUPPORT

Our team has significant expertise and experience of working in a Special Needs Co-ordinator role, which includes leadership of special needs, English as an additional Language and Children in Care. However, the rapidly changing SEN landscape has brought with it ever greater demands on the role of the SENCO managing responsibilities from teaching and family liaison to EHC Plans, SEN Support, budgets and training.
Trying to navigate this minefield, with limited time and resources, has meant that many SENCOs are struggling to find a balance or are having to rely on temporary fixes to deal with problems. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach here. We offer SENCOs a free review meeting to identify the main pressure points and explore where we can use our skills to provide long term solutions. We don’t believe in short cuts but we do believe in using our specialist expertise to work smarter and cut through the bureaucracy, so that SENCO’s can deliver better outcomes for their students, more effectively.

TRAINING

We have a range of training packages that cover many of the issues affecting the delivery of special educational needs in schools. We also offer a more bespoke affordable package, either following an audit of your training needs or by creating a course to address a specific subject you would like to learn more about. Examples include training on SEND Reforms, medical needs, systems and processes, parental collaboration, governor support and engaging with other services.

We also offer an in-depth review of your current systems and protocols for children and young people with additional needs. This can encompass those with special needs and English as an Additional Language. We audit using the ‘Assess, Plan, Do, Review’ cycle; engage with your leadership team and recommend where training would help. We use our self-assessment review tool to help you develop your short, medium and long term plans. These techniques have been welcomed by ofsted inspectors in schools we have worked with, as they give a clear indication that the team and school are fully aware of their strengths and challenges and have an improvement plan in place.

LEADERSHIP TEAMS

Ensuring that your organisation is as inclusive and supportive as possible towards its staff, can often get lost amongst other priorities of leadership teams and management boards. Often though, organisations who support their staff the most are exceptionally productive, have the least staff turnover and are organisations that are innovative and creative in their approach, who welcome the diversity of experiences amongst their teams. This approach in some organisations takes a cultural shift and takes some people well out of their comfort zone. We are able to work with boards and management teams to discuss why this cultural shift is so important in terms of their sustainability and corporate responsibilities.

TRAINING

Due to our collective experiences, expertise and knowledge we are able to provide support and training covering a wide range of areas and issues. We have delivered webinar training, dial up support, funded by the organisation. We can facilitate parent and/or carer support groups. We have delivered training on EHC Plans and SEN Support to banking staff. Your organisations responsibilities in terms of contracts and support for flexible working arrangements, along with supporting and encouraging people with disabilities are also vital to give an inclusive nature to your organisation. Emotional resilience, self confidence and being able to build the self esteem of your staff are also strengths of successful organisations, we can give some top tips to managers on how to support that process.

SOCIAL VALUE

Adding a social value, is one of those buzz words, but what does it actually mean and why is it important? As a social enterprise our mission, which is to support those individuals with special needs and their families, is our focus and at the heart of all we do. Obviously we need to be sustainable therefore funding is also important, but any excess finance is returned to support those of little means. How much does your organisation understand social value and how intrinsic is it to what you do? is it just an add on? We can help you look at your organisations social value in terms of its wider impact on society and how helping others and looking at how you, as an organisation, add social value can raise the productivity of the company.

COMMUNITY DAYS

We know how important it is to support your staff development in order to enthuse, motivate and build solid relationships and a team built on trust and mutual respect. Many companies and organisations build these relationships by supporting local community projects and charities. We have extensive knowledge and relationships with local, regional and national support groups and organisations and can coordinate and collaborate to make sure that all parties get the most out of the day together as possible.

INFORMATION and SUPPORT

Professionals across all sectors, especially those who are working at the front line supporting those individuals with special needs and/or disabilities and their families, need to have a thorough understanding of the latest SEN changes, and the ability to apply them at the appropriate time. It can be overwhelming keeping up with the latest legislation and understanding what this means in practice; not just within the arena of special needs, but also the impact of cuts to local authority and health budgets. For the most part this is unchartered territory, but we can help you navigate this minefield and give you the confidence to understand the processes and systems as well as the ethos, vision and reason for the cultural shift behind the changes.

HEALTH

We understand that the changes to support for children and young people with special needs have had a big impact on health professionals, who are also having to cope with reforms to health service delivery. The reforms to special needs support mean that health colleagues are required to work in a more integrated way, with all services supporting the individual and the family. Co-production and integration of services does work, but can be challenging, as you try to plot the best course of action, against sometimes competing agendas. The types of support health colleagues provide children and young people with can vary widely, from infrequent exchange with a community nurse, to regular appointments or stays in hospital, along with services such as CAMHS and the often difficult transitions between paediatric services and adult services. This can mean that it is difficult to find time to coordinate the best support available. We are experienced in working in co-production, coordinating individuals and teams to build reciprocal relationships between other professionals and with children, young people and their families more effectively.

SOCIAL CARE

The right social care support is vital in helping children and young people to perform well at school and to build the best foundations for their lives. This is especially the case for those with special needs and/or disability. Social Care can come in many shapes and sizes, from community support, family support, voluntary support, it does not always mean a social worker. There are often tensions between families and parents interpretation of social care and the reality of the system. We are able to work with social care teams in children’s and adults services to make sure that the professionals in those teams are fully aware of those tensions and how best to work around them, in the most creative ways.

PERSONALISATION

Personalisation is difficult to achieve, there are conflicting pressures, many professionals we have worked with admit they want everything they do to be personalised and person centred but they struggle to manage this with the opposing issues of the ‘process’ and constraints imposed on them. We are exceptionally adept at coordinating and collaborating and what we find easy to do is communicate with all relevant individuals to reach the best outcome for the child or young person.
